The residential conversion at a former bowling alley in DC received a key thumbs up this week.
On Thursday, DC's Historic Preservation Board approved the proposal for Brookland Lanes, a large residential development constructed around the site of a former bowling alley at 3726 10th Street NE (map) in Brookland.

The UIP-led project, designed by ktgy, will have 337 apartments, as well as a pool and an outdoor amenity space on the roof of the existing historical building. The development also includes a new public retail plaza at the corner of 10th Street NE and Michigan Avenue NE.

"Brookland Lanes’ big idea is to accentuate the existing historic building by designing a handsome yet understated new building around it," the plans stated. "The new building components step down and back from the historical building to emphasize it as a centerpiece, which serves as the main project entry and amenity experience."
The duckpin bowling alley at 3726 10th Street NE was in operation from 1939 to about 1950 when a fire severely damaged the building. The property was most recently occupied by the Atlantic Electric Supply Co.
