Where Are Metro's Busiest Routes and Stations?
Courtesy of Greater Greater Washington
WMATA recently released loads of data about Metro usage, and today, Greater Greater Washington’s Matt Johnson and Housing Complex’s Aaron Wiener dug into the data to highlight interesting trends and facts.
Here are a few of their findings:
Union Station and Farragut North are (unsurprisingly) busy — Based on the date, the most popular Metro trip on the system is Farragut North to Union Station during the afternoon rush hour, discovered Wiener. Shady Grove to Farragut North in the morning is the second most popular trip. In the mornings, the greatest number of passengers enter the Metro system at Union Station, noted Johnson.
Where is everyone going to work? Farragut. — In the morning, the highest number of passengers exit at Farragut North, followed by Farragut West and then Metro Center.
The Green Line, though not popular during the day, transports many night owls. — The most popular late-night trip is Gallery Place to Columbia Heights, and three of the top five late-night trips are along the Green Line, said Wiener. During rush hour, the top trips are dominated by the Red and Orange/Blue lines.
Dupont Circle is the number one evening destination. — Dupont Circle has the highest number of passenger exits in the evenings, followed closely by Gallery Place, noted Johnson.
Weekenders love the National Mall. — The top trip on both Saturdays and Sundays is Vienna to Smithsonian, found Wiener.
