There was a time when terms like "Dupont" and "Busboys and Poets" were the buzzwords used to attract prospective renters and homebuyers to certain neighborhoods in the DC area. Now, just a week after Amazon announced it would be moving to Northern Virginia, no piece of property seems to be too far way from HQ2 in order to be marketed with Amazon or the "National Landing" moniker.
While it makes sense that homes on the market in Northern Virginia would tout their proximity to Amazon's second headquarters (40 active listings in Arlington and Alexandria now do), the marketing of Amazon continues in DC. Seventeen listings on the market in the city highlight the new HQ2 campus and National Landing neighborhood in their descriptions. Homes on the market in neighborhoods ranging from Palisades to Petworth are using Amazon to attract consumers.
"Short distance to all DC hot spots, VA/Tyson's and future Amazon HQ2 are right across the Key and Chain bridges," this Palisades listing states. A new condo in Petworth highlights the unit's metro accessibility to both HQ2 and National Landing. Local real estate brokerages already have webpages dedicated to "National Landing", with 35 listings between two in particular.
Even Montgomery County is getting into the mix. A couple of listings along Potomac River include language about location relative to the new HQ2. The description for another listing, a condo in Chevy Chase, cites the unit's location "9 miles from the new Amazon headquarters".
Much of this marketing is an effort to strike while the Amazon iron is hot. A recent Wall Street Journal article reports that condos in Long Island City, NY, where the other half of HQ2 will be located, have been selling sight unseen via text message from investors looking to cash in on the Amazon rush.
