This week in What X Rents You, UrbanTurf looked in the $1,500 a month range and found a variety of choices for prospective renters in the region with this monthly budget.
A Fully Furnished Columbia Heights Basement
While not a single window is visible from any of the photos, this Columbia Heights basement has a few features that increase its livability: the bedroom area is behind the kitchen and feels separate from the main living space, and the kitchen comes equipped with a very reasonable amount of counter space. The landlords are throwing in furniture, a TV and a cable hookup, and Meridian Pint, Red Rocks Pizzeria and Wonderland are right around the corner when you want to escape.

A Swanky Room and a New Friend in Mount Vernon Square
For those willing to live with another person, there’s a room available in a penthouse apartment in Mount Vernon Square on top of the (relatively) new Safeway. The room has a walk-in closet, a bathroom and a loft area, and the current tenant has furnished the shared areas. You’ll need to provide references from past roommates, and the lister seems to be looking for more than a year with a stranger (“Most of my best memories are with roommates, so I’m hoping we’ll become friends.”). The room is available starting in August.

Newly Remodeled One-Bedroom Out in Lorton
An 850 square-foot rental is available in the area, but city dwellers will have to venture to the Occoquan Overlook in Lorton to find it. The one-bedroom unit is above a garage next to a family home occupied by the landlords. It looks like the space was just turned into a residential unit, as it has a new kitchen, bathroom and floors. Internet and cable are all hooked up, and the rental rate includes utilities. The tenant will have to submit to a background check.
