For this installment of What X Buys, UrbanTurf takes a look at some area options for would-be buyers trying to stay under $700,000.

A House Above a Suite and a Studio

This semi-detached brick house in Brookland has stacked balconies above a garage-turned-studio. The front door is tucked beneath an arch at the top of the stairs, entering into a foyer with archways on two sides. To one side, the living room has double exposure and a non-functioning brick corner fireplace. Through a separate butler's pantry/bar room, the kitchen has butcher block countertops, lion's-head drawer pulls, a stainless steel hood above the stove, and a breakfast bar peninsula separating it from the dining area. There is a hutch built into a nook on the upstairs landing, where the hall has dual access to the covered balcony. The lower level has a separate entrance, a rec room, a laundry area with sink and countertop, and a bedroom suite. The backyard also has another driveway/patio area.

The L-shaped kitchen has a triangular breakfast bar island with rounded corners, along with a stainless steel double basin sink. A few stairs between the kitchen and the dining area lead up to a loft-like bedroom suite with washer/dryer. Next to a built-in desk in the living area, a glass barn door leads into another bedroom. The unit also comes with a garage parking space and storage unit.

Newly under-contract and with easy access to downtown Silver Spring, this three-bedroom Colonial has a front porch with bench swing beneath the pitched roof. Just inside the living room, there is a set of built-in shelving above cabinets beside the front door, and on the adjacent wall is a window seat next to a wood-burning fireplace. A double-wide archway leads into the dining room, which has a corner built-in shelving unit. The kitchen retains its original tin press ceiling and has stained butcher block countertops and a retro black-and-white tile backsplash between the stove and the hood. Through paned french doors, the bonus room on the main level provides access to the backyard with patio, and also has a wide, trapezoidal window seat between sets of recessed shelving. The three bedrooms upstairs share a full bath, and the house also has an unfinished basement with half bath.
