Spies Like Us: What (About) $500,000 Buys in the DC Area

  • June 15th 2022

by Ashley Hopko

The latest edition of What $500,000 Buys includes a Cleveland Park condo with a backstory of espionage, an updated Alexandria townhome and a colorfully decorated unit in SW DC.

A Cleveland Park Condo With a Backstory

This Cleveland Park condo comes with a scandalous backstory. Its former tenant, Ana Montes, was arrested and charged with spying for the Cuban government in 2001, according to the current owner. Montes is set to be released from prison next year - but won’t be returning to this two-bedroom, which features a contemporary layout. The kitchen and living room are separated by a half wall that includes additional storage and white wooden detailing throughout the unit helps to lighten up the space. The main bedroom features built-in wardrobes and a middle window seat, which UrbanTurf found particularly charming.

A Colorful Mid-Century Modern Unit

This mid-century modern townhouse in the Southwest Waterfront is defined by its wood floors and artistic finishes. Fun design choices include colorful tiling and painted wood floors in the kitchen, modern lighting fixtures and jungle-themed wallpaper in the lower bathroom. UrbanTurf's favorite feature of the townhouse is the glass wall that opens into the private back patio, which features a bright mural. Upstairs, the main bedroom includes a balcony overlooking 4th Street, and in the basement, residents can take advantage of den space that could be used as an office or guest bedroom.
