What $33 Million Buys: 700 Acres and a Golf Course in Virginia
If this golf course in Fort Washington is too small, or restoring and operating these historic DC golf courses is too limiting, this 942-acre property might be just right.
For $33 million, you can now buy the Sam Snead golf course and the 700 surrounding acres at 129 Tavern Lane (map) in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Amherst County, Virginia. The property includes a historic Manor House, built in 1773, and the listing also comes with plans to construct a new clubhouse. The property is listed with Theo Adamstein of TTR Sotheby's International Realty.

A round of renovations were completed on the six-mile course just last month, and there were also plans to restore the Manor House, with the ultimate goal of operating like a hotel and wedding venue. The course also announced a partnership with Sweet Briar College right after the renovations wrapped, offering guests overnight packages.
Two years after the golf course delivered in 2004, Amherst County approved redevelopment plans for the location; these fell through due to the recession. This listing touts the "tremendous development potential" of the site, although it seems a new owner would also have the option of maintaining the property as a golf course — the course is still accepting membership applications.
