West Elm furnishings
Just a few weeks after CB2 opened its doors in Georgetown, news comes that another home furnishings store is setting up shop temporarily in the city’s oldest neighborhood.
On Sunday, The Washington Post reported that West Elm will be opening up a temporary store in Georgetown at 3333 M Street NW (map). The store is set to open in July, and has signed just a seven-month lease. Shorter leases for large chains have become fairly common in recent years, The Post reports:
Pop-up stores caught on during the downturn as a way for retailers to test new concepts, generate buzz for a brand or simply off-load inventory, sans the risk of a long-term lease. Landlords, rocked by sky-high vacancy, were all too happy to welcome paying tenants, even on a month-to-month basis. Even as the economy improved, temporary retail lost none of its appeal. Property owners still have vacancies. And tenants remain skittish about taking space for several years amid a volatile recovery.
Home furnishing lovers likely remember the sprawling West Elm store on G Street, which closed its doors in March of last year. At 6,500 square feet, the Georgetown store will be much more modest.
