UrbanTurf Reader Asks: Who Is The Authority on Housing Prices?

In this week’s installment of UrbanTurf Reader Asks, a reader inquires as to what is the most trustworthy resource when it comes to home values.
I pride myself on keeping up with the ups and downs of home prices, particularly in DC where I own a home. While DC is one of the few places in the country where home values appear to be holding steady and or rising over the last year, I feel that it all depends on the source providing the information. I think that the Case-Shiller Index is widely regarded as the authority on home prices, but for DC-specific values, would I be better off looking at data from MRIS or a national research firm like Core Logic?
