The leaning home in Shaw appears to have been stabilized. A reader contacted UrbanTurf this morning saying that the row house at 1607 New Jersey Avenue NW had been red-tagged by the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) and that engineers were on site to resolve the problem. Yesterday, we reported via ABC 7 News that the row house was leaning dangerously and residents worried that the building was on the verge of falling over.

DCRA’s Michael Rupert confirmed to UrbanTurf that engineers had taken down the back section of the property and that the front portion of the home had been stabilized. Rupert noted that they wanted to be careful with the front of the home because it is located in a historic district, but that contractors are coming soon to seal up the back of the house.

“The house was about double the length of other homes in the neighborhood,” he explained, noting that an addition was built off the back at some point.

Rupert said that the home was owned by an older man who passed away and that his family is currently in the process of trying to figure out what to do with the property. DCRA is in contact with the family and will help them with decision.
