Two-Year Extension Sought For Brookland Bowling Alley Conversion

A residential conversion in Brookland that will include reimagining a former bowling alley building will be delayed for a couple years. 

An application has been filed with DC's Historic Preservation Board for a two-year extension of the approval for Brookland Lanes, a large residential development planned around the site of a former bowling alley at 3726 10th Street NE (map).

"The Applicant has been unable to proceed with filing a building permit application before the Approval expired due to economic and market conditions beyond the Applicant’s reasonable control, including an elevated interest rate environment and sustained high construction costs, which together have impacted the ability to obtain financing for construction of the Project," the application stated. 

Designed by ktgy, the project would have 337 apartments, as well as a pool and an outdoor amenity space on the roof of the existing historical building. The development also includes a new public retail plaza at the corner of 10th Street NE and Michigan Avenue NE. 

"Brookland Lanes’ big idea is to accentuate the existing historic building by designing a handsome yet understated new building around it," the plans stated when approved in 2023. 

The duckpin bowling alley on 10th Street NE was in operation from 1939 to about 1950 when a fire severely damaged the building. The property was most recently occupied by the Atlantic Electric Supply Co.
