A year ago, UrbanTurf reported on plans for a grocery store that was looking to open in Friendship Heights, and the rumor around the neighborhood was that it would be a Trader Joe's. It now looks like that rumor has been confirmed.

Last week, ANC 3E Commissioner Jon Bender posted that the ANC had received a liquor license application for a new Trader Joe's at the Chevy Chase Pavilion (map).

"Hear ye, @TenleyANC has received a liquor license application for Trader Joe's at 5335 Wisconsin Ave in Chevy Chase Pavilion," Bender tweeted.

Last February, Clarion Partners, the owner of the Chevy Chase Pavilion, filed modifications to its 1986 planned unit development (PUD) in order to make a grocery store feasible for the mall. The new store would occupy approximately 18,000 square feet in the former H&M space.

Clarion Partners was tight-lipped regarding the name of the grocery chain, but did say it would be a national boutique grocery tenant which started the buzz about Trader Joe's.

The Trader Joe's will be the third grocer in Friendship Heights; Whole Foods Market and Amazon Fresh are located nearby. The retail portion of the Pavilion has largely emptied out over the last several years, and The Cheesecake Factory is the lone remaining retailer. The building is not the only mall in the neighborhood making changes. Across Wisconsin Avenue, Mazza Gallerie is being reimagined as a 7-story, 325-unit apartment project with 25,000 square feet of retail.
