Torpedo Factory Lofts

In a neighborhood full of Revolutionary-era housing stock, This Week’s Find is a rare contemporary option (though still with historical ties). A one-bedroom unit was recently listed at the Torpedo Factory Lofts in Old Town (map) across the street from the Torpedo Factory Art Center, which serves as a studio and gallery space for 165 visual artists.

Living Room

During both World Wars, the U.S. Naval Torpedo Station churned out torpedoes from the waterfront land now occupied by the Torpedo Factory. The City of Alexandria bought the land from the Federal Government in 1969, and the art center and lofts were developed in the early 1980’s.

Bedroom

This 720 square-foot condo has a living room with 20-foot ceilings and a lofted bedroom looking down on it. With skylights and and a lofty stained glass window, the modestly sized unit feels bright inside, and built-in shelves and a bar at the kitchen counter help maximize the space. The living room also has a wood-burning fireplace and opens onto a private balcony.
