Escher-esque stairs
Many of DC’s row house renovations look very similar to each other. This Week’s Find manages to re-imagine stairs, walls and rooms in a manner that is completely unique.
The most unusual part of this five-bedroom Columbia Heights house is the staircase, which is open to the center of the house and capped by a skylight. The staircase turns at right angles and rises up three stories. From the photo, it almost looks like an optical illusion or an Escher print. The result is a kind of balcony all along the center rooms of the second floor; the current owners maximize the balcony-effect with planters.
Other appealing aspects of this house are the landscaped backyard, chef’s kitchen and guest suite on the ground floor.

Kitchen with breakfast bar
The third floor is completely occupied by the master suite, which has a sitting room in a sloped-ceilinged room in the back, a walk-in closet, and a rooftop deck. One odd element is in the master bathroom, where the double sinks sinks are separated by a wall (for eyebrow plucking privacy, presumably).
The coolest part of the master bedroom is a nook by the front windows that has just enough room for a chair and a small table. You have to climb up a couple steps to get into the area. The nook is echoed in another bedroom where the owners have placed a bed for a very cozy, cave-like sleeping area.
