This Week's Find: A Modern Log Cabin
6902 Cherry Avenue
Most of the homes we see fit into a neat category (colonial, Tudor, bungalow), so it’s a pleasant shock to find something completely unique. This Week’s Find feels like a modern take on a log cabin and harkens back to the days when people built homes that were customized to their needs.
Multi-level layout
Built in 1986, the home’s wooden exterior can be spied behind trees in Takoma Park. Though just one bedroom, the property spans two buildings, with a main house and a carriage house on the grounds.
The current owner made a number of improvements, the agent tells us, including adding a sun-reflecting roof and an HVAC system with a two-zone heat pump. The kitchen and bathrooms have high-efficiency features and distinctive Mexican tile.
Kitchen
The layout is multi-level, with the kitchen and loft looking down on the great room and the master suite at the top of the main house. The master suite has stained glass windows, a skylight, a jetted tub and a walk-in closet. The kitchen continues the wooden feel, with custom rounded pine counters. Another cool space is an unfinished loft area in the carriage house that could be a studio or art area.
Custom features abound, with windows, built-in shelves and a private patio designed specifically for the house. The relatively small home sits on a woodsy lot that spans almost a quarter of an acre. The landscaped yard, fencing and tall trees add to the private, homestead feel.
Update: As we were in the process of writing about this home, we found out that it’s already under contract. You got to move quickly these days!
