Plans for one of the oldest diners in Silver Spring as well as one of the largest new residential developments in the DC suburb are moving forward.
The Tastee Diner, a mainstay along Georgia Avenue for nearly 80 years, closed its doors in 2023. Since then, a huge redevelopment plan at its site has taken shape.
Roadside Development filed a sketch plan with Montgomery County earlier this year for a new high-rise residential development with up to 525 apartments at 8676 Georgia Avenue and 8601 Cameron Street (map). Now, those plans will go before the county's Development Review Committee later this month.

As part of the new development, Roadside will preserve the Tastee Diner car.
"While the previous owner of the Tastee Diner chose to close its doors, the Applicant is proposing to retain the Historic Tastee Diner Car, restore its exterior, and adaptively re-use and incorporate it into the overall redevelopment," the filing stated. The diner car will likely be used for retail or as a restaurant.
The design for the 30-story project, from Bonstra|Haresign Architects, will include 20,000 square feet of retail, there will be at least 340 parking spaces and 15 percent of the apartments will be moderately-priced dwelling units.
While the Silver Spring location closed, there are still two Tastee Diner outposts in Bethesda and Laurel.
