1,100 Feet in the Air: The Hemisphere's Highest Observation Deck to Open
Manhattan's Hudson Yards is adding a new attraction to its offerings: an observation deck 1,100 feet in the air.
The Edge at Hudson Yards will open tomorrow (map), Fast Company reports. The attraction is created from a triangular, 80-foot cantilevered deck jutting out from the 100th floor of the building. The architects identify the deck as the highest in the Western Hemisphere and the fifth-highest worldwide.
The deck offers 360 views and is framed with 9 foot-tall glass walls, while also including a triangle of glass underfoot through which one can view the ground below.
“As great as I think the observation decks are around the city, they are a part of the building, and you’re standing on top," said Marianne Kwok, director at architectural firm (and Edge designer) KPF. "Here, we wanted the experience to really be dramatic.”
The 7,500 square-foot deck has a capacity of 800 visitors at a time, but tickets are required.
