Raze Application May Spell The End For One of DC's Last Diner Buildings
The end may be near for one of DC's last diner buildings.
The American City Diner, a staple along upper Connecticut Avenue (map) from 1988 to 2018, may be torn down in the coming months. A raze application was filed for the property at 5532 Connecticut Avenue NW (map) on Tuesday.
The diner closed in 2018 following a 30-year run. Former city boxing commissioner Jeffrey Gildenhorn, who brought the diner to Chevy Chase DC, passed away in 2017.

Not long after the diner closed its doors, restaurateur Steve Salis, best known for owning Ted's Bulletin, Federalist Pig and Kramerbooks & Afterwords, unveiled plans to open a French brasserie and café that offered breakfast, lunch and dinner. There has been little movement on those plans since early 2019.
UrbanTurf has reached out to the leasing and management teams for the building, and will update this article as we get more information about what the future may hold.
