Poll Results: Where Will You Send Your Kids to School?
Earlier this week, we asked readers about their school preferences. Did parents plan on sending their kids to their local DC public school, or were charters more appealing? Are they considering a move out to the suburbs? If they are current parents, what did they decide?
The results are in, and all of the options received a sizable number of votes. However, the top spot went to the option that may please hopeful school reformers. That is, the decision to stay put and send their children to the local public school. The charter school option came in a close second. Together, the two options took 46 percent of the total vote.
The next three choices — moving to Maryland or Virginia, moving within DC to a neighborhood with more appealing public school options, and sending your child to private school — are closely clumped together, with the final tallies within a handful of votes of each other.
Quite a few parents and prospective parents indicated that they would be willing to move to an area with better public schools. While the vote count was extremely close, the number of parents who wanted to move out to Maryland or Virginia was slightly more than those who wanted to stay within the District, but just move to another neighborhood. About 17 percent of respondents prefer to send their kids to private school.
