Plans for DC's new emergency men's shelter are coming into focus.

Earlier this week, the DC Department of General Services filed a planned unit development (PUD) for the new shelter in Ivy City. The shelter, designed by DC-based Sorg Architects, will take the place of an animal shelter located at 1201 New York Avenue NE (map) which will be moved to another location.

The new shelter will have 407 permanent beds as well as space for an additional 80-100 cots for hypothermia needs. There will be a central dining area, as well as educational and recreational space, and an on-site medical clinic.

"The Project will have five distinct programs: low barrier shelter housing, work program housing, senior housing, respite, and hypothermia housing," the PUD stated.

The new shelter will serve as a much-needed replacement for the existing emergency men's shelter located further down New York Avenue. That building is facing a number of issues ranging from failing HVAC systems to outdated electrical systems to limited space for resident programs.

The new shelter is named "The Heritage", and its modern aesthetic includes a split wing design so that the property can be constructed around a Heritage tree at the center of the building site.
