Parking Ticket Amnesty, Alexandria Gets Red Light Cameras
Starting today, DC’s Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will offer a temporary ticket amnesty program that allows offenders to pay parking tickets issued before January 1, 2010 (as well as tickets for moving violations) without any late-fee penalties tacked on. Offenders can pay tickets without late-fee charges from today through January 27, 2012. The program, which was also offered by DC back in 2001, could net the city $6.3 million in revenue.
In other traffic-related news, the Alexandria police department has announced the installation of red-light cameras at three of the area’s intersections: South Patrick Street and Franklin Street (map), South Patrick Street and Gibbon Street (map) and Duke Street and South Walker Street (map). Drivers caught running red lights at these intersections will receive a $50 fine.
Based on the performance of the cameras in DC, the boon in revenue may be less than those in the Alexandria government expect. The cameras in DC have resulted in just $8.5 million in fines, according to WUSA9, rather than the expected $20 million.
