Airbnb is giving new meaning to the term "workforce housing".
A new report from the short-term home rental service states that one in 10 Airbnb hosts are teachers. Hosting on Airbnb nets the typical teacher an additional $6,500 per year, and while there are 45,000 active Airbnb hosts who are teachers, 75,000 host households include a member who is a teacher.

In DC and Maryland, 7 percent of Airbnb hosts are teachers, sharing their home 53 and 63 days on median, respectively. In Virginia, teachers are over-represented among Airbnb hosts compared to the national average, making up 15 percent of hosts; teachers there share their homes on the service for 42 days per year.
With teachers in jurisdictions nationwide walking out to protest low wages, it may be unsurprising that many are finding ways to supplement their income. Earlier this year, UrbanTurf reported on data showing just over one-third of homes in the DC area are affordable for teachers.
