The National Multifamily Housing Council (NMHC) has released a statement recommending that apartment owners halt evictions for 90 days in light of the coronavirus pandemic. The moratorium would be for renters who can demonstrate being affected by the pandemic.
NMHC is also asking apartment owners to refrain from raising rents for 90 days, waive late fees, and negotiate payment plans for affected tenants.
The statement highlights the importance of Congress enacting protections for mortgagees who own rental properties to permit forbearance and leniency around ancillary costs, and creating emergency assistance for renters. NMHC has also submitted a letter to Congress requesting an "emergency rental assistance fund".
"As the nation contends with the COVID-19 outbreak and millions are sheltering in place, having safe and secure housing is more important than ever," the statement reads. "By working together – apartment residents, owners and operators, and lawmakers at all levels of government – we can develop solutions to the evolving challenges and keep Americans housed."
