Mortgage rates ticked up again this week, with Freddie Mac's Primary Mortgage Market Survey showing the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaging 6.76% as of September 10, up from 6.71% the week prior. The long-term rate is now notably higher than where it stood last year at 6.35%.
Whether this marks a sustained climb or another blip in a mostly sideways summer for rates remains to be seen. Forecasters, including Fannie Mae and the Mortgage Bankers Association, have generally projected rates to ease modestly later this year, though those predictions have proven fluid amid shifting economic signals. In the meantime, expect the rate conversation to remain a fixture at open houses across the region, as agents and buyers alike try to parse whether now is the moment to lock in or wait for a more favorable window.
