Georgetown Landmark General Store Back on Market
The mixed-use property that houses Scheele’s Market in Georgetown is up for sale again, over a year and a half after it originally hit the market and sparked a community effort to save it.
Scheele’s Market
The property, located on the corner of Dumbarton and 29th Street, is listed for $1.2 million. Here is the description from the listing:
This Georgetown landmark property has been in the same family for over 100 years! The ‘special use zoning’ to permit a market is grandfathered. .. The neighborhood loves its charming, convenient market, although a new owner could transform the property to an elegant Georgetown residence with a lovely garden and parking. Adjacent townhouse offers 3 levels, and deserves a renovation!
The property is still owned by the Scheele family, but for years the market bearing their name has been run by Kye Lee and her husband. While not known for its extensive selection, Scheele’s has for decades been a daily stop for many Georgetown residents.
Over the past year and a half, Georgetown Metropolitan has extensively covered the efforts to save the market, which included a creative solution where Georgetown resident Marc Teren would buy the building, and a group of neighborhood residents would lease the market space. On July 16th, GM reported that the sale to Teren was off.
