Infill development in DC historic districts often incorporates existing structures into new multi-family projects. Far less often, existing structures are moved to make way for new multi-family projects. But that is what is happening in Cleveland Park.
Preservation DC and Teass\Warren Architects have teamed up to move a two-story house at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and Macomb Street NW (map), and then incorporate it into a 16-unit residential development.
The house would be shifted away from Wisconsin Avenue and rotated to face Macomb Street. A six-story addition would then be appended to the house fronting Wisconsin Avenue, delivering 14 residential units, all accessible by elevator. The house would be converted into a bi-level two-bedroom/two-bathroom unit and a one-bedroom/one-bathroom unit.
Located in the Cleveland Park Historic District, the site is zoned RA-4, which typically allows for medium- or high-density residential with a maximum height of 90 feet. The Historic Preservation Review Board (HPRB) is expected to consider the case on November 15th.
