DC Superior Court Temporarily Stays Evictions and Foreclosures

The country is officially in a state of emergency to stem the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. As the DC Council prepares to consider an emergency bill regarding the virus that includes eviction protections, the DC Superior Court has issued an order enacting some protections.
This weekend, the Court announced several procedural changes that will be in effect until May 1st, including a stay on all foreclosure and eviction proceedings in the District. Any hearings scheduled for Housing Court or Landlord and Tenant Court will also be postponed during this time.

Montgomery County enacted a similar court order last week, although it will be for 15-day intervals with the option to extend as needed. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have also issued guidance to lenders and mortgagees who may be financially impacted during the pandemic to accept coronavirus-related hardships as valid for forbearance requests.
