Columbia Heights is One of Top Urban Projects in U.S.: Figure 1

The Urban Land Institute recognized DC’s Columbia Heights neighborhood today as one of ten winners for its 2010 Awards for Excellence. The awards highlight innovative and successful land use projects across the country. Bethesda Row, the popular mixed use development in downtown Bethesda, was also one of 17 finalists for the award.

Once considered a no man’s land because of the crime rate and lack of development, Columbia Heights’ transformation into a viable commercial and residential neighborhood over the past few years is widely recognized. Much of this change has been attributed to the DCUSA shopping center that opened in 2008 and houses a Target, Best Buy and Washington Sports Club among other establishments.

And if you thought that these places were particularly crowded when you went to get a new pair of earphones or a box of Cherrios, you’d be right. In the latest Northwest Current, Sedrick Muhammad, president of the South Columbia Heights Community Association, is quoted as saying that the Columbia Heights Target is the second busiest in the entire country while the Best Buy is the second busiest on the East Coast. The chain stores are bringing people together, folks!
