Buffalo Exchange is coming to the 14th Street Corridor in early 2012. The thrift store that has developed a nationwide following will be taking 4,245 square feet on two levels at 1314 14th Street NW (map) just south of Rhode Island Avenue.
The Arizona-based clothing store’s newest outpost will bring some trendy cachet to the increasingly posh and nightlife oriented street, which recently lost some beloved retailers to make room for restaurants, bars and high-end furniture stores. The discerning thrift shop collects 80 percent of its inventory from local customers, who have the option of selling or trading in their used clothing. To maintain their hip reputation, Buffalo Exchange settles in progressive, urban areas to ensure quality goods; some of their most popular stores are in NYC’s East Village and Williamsburg, Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, and in downtown Portland, Oreg. around the corner from The Ace Hotel and Powell’s City of Books.

In related news, Philadelphia restaurateur Stephen Starr will be opening a French bistro at the corner of 14th and Q Streets NW in about 10 months, according to Missy Frederick of the Washington Business Journal. Rumors have been floating around for some time that Starr would be opening up a place in the former shirt laundry.
Both new establishments will join a stretch that is well known for its restaurant and bar options, as well as a number of residential projects that are on the horizon.
