Best Addition to DC's Food Scene: Union Market
This year, DC saw the creation of one of the most buzzed-about additions to the city’s food scene in years. Union Market, an array of specialty food purveyors and restaurant space, went up at 1309 5th Street NE (map) adjacent to Florida Avenue Market at the end of the summer.
The market had a soft opening in September, throwing open the door three days a week for consumers to enjoy food from places like Rappahanock Oyster Co., Righteous Cheese and Peregrine Espresso. At the time, it still had plenty of space for more vendors, and developer Edens was working hard to line up appropriate butchers, ice cream makers and artisanal picklers.
The hard work paid off as the market has filled up more and is now open Wednesday through Sunday. Eateries like TaKorean, a popular food truck concept, have taken root in the warehouse-like space, and developers recently announced that New York chef John Mooney would be opening a restaurant there. The space has also already played host to several events, like the very-crowded Crafty Bastards and a lamb burger cook-off.
The momentum continues to build around the concept; earlier this month, The Washington Post’s Jonathan O’Connell reported that Union Market may serve as a catalyst to larger development in the immediate area.
