Airbnb CEO Vows To Provide Free Housing to Those Affected by Muslim Ban
On Friday, the Trump administration issued an executive order temporarily barring Muslims from entering the United States. The next day, Airbnb’s CEO Brian Chesky tweeted plans to offer free lodging to refugees and travelers stranded by the ban.
“Airbnb is providing free housing to refugees and anyone else who needs it in the event they are denied the ability to board a US-bound flight and are not in your city/country of residence,” Chesky is reported to have said. “We have 3 million homes, so we can definitely find people a place to stay.”
Details and logistics of the plan are still forthcoming. It is unclear whether or how Airbnb will ensure that the hosts who list their homes on the site are compliant with this plan or whether they will be be compensated somehow.
The ban, effective immediately, applies to visa-holders, refugees and other citizens of seven majority-Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.
