$1,000 Above Asking for Argyle House Unit
This Embassy Row condominium is full of history, occupying two levels of one of the turrets of the Argyle House. The building was designed by acclaimed architect Paul J. Pelz, best known for being a lead architect for the Library of Congress, and later converted into condos by architect Richard Ridley. The two-bedroom unit impresses with a curvilinear living room and owner's suite, as well as attractive details like uniquely-patterned restored lead windows, hand-painted checkerboard and striped flooring and stained pine millwork. The main level includes a screened-in porch with shiplap ceiling which leads outside to a slate-paved patio and the deep backyard, framed with shrubbery and mature trees. The owner's suite has double exposure and a deep walk-in closet, while the top floor, with its cove ceiling, could serve as an expansive additional bedroom or bonus room. Whether or not DC is still a seller's market, it was certainly a seller's market for the previous owner of this Mount Pleasant home. The over-3,200 square-foot end-unit rowhouse has a traditional layout, its parquet wood flooring outlined with inlayed borders delineating each of the rooms on the main level. The living room hosts a bay window and a wood-framed fireplace with tiled surround, while the adjacent family room houses the wood-paneled stair with built-in closet. The kitchen has an exposed brick wall, quartz countertops and marble-topped island, and a stainless steel hood above a built-in gas cooktop. A door with transom leads out to a covered wooden deck, the roof of which also doubles as a balcony for the owner's bedroom. The lower level is a mostly above-grade one-bedroom au pair suite. The whole package resulted in multiple offers and the home selling for a $281,000 premium.
