A Proposed Bill in DC Would Protect Homeowners Against Construction-Related Damage

A proposed bill aims to protect DC homeowners from the effects of any construction that might be happening next door.
The Protecting Adjacent and Adjoining Property Owners from Construction Damage Amendment Act of 2022 was introduced Tuesday by Mayor Muriel Bowser. The legislation would require DC property owners, contractors, or any party applying for a construction or demolition permit to obtain liability insurance to insure adjacent property owners for loss or damage arising out of any work that is done.

Currently, contractors are required to provide proof of liability insurance, however there is no requirement that requires insurance for adjacent properties.
“Once enacted, this proposed legislation will close gaps in insurance requirements and provide coverage for adjoining and adjacent District homeowners negatively impacted by damage during construction, addition, alteration, repair, demolition or raze,” said DCRA Director Ernest Chrappah.
