A Look at the 58 Townhouses Planned for Walter Reed

UrbanTurf recently took a look at the residential development pipeline in the Takoma and Shepherd Park neighborhoods, previewing areas of the Walter Reed development. Now, one of the components of the Walter Reed campus is coming into sharper focus.
The development team has submitted concept plans for Parcel WXY, which will be improved with 58 townhouses along Aspen Street between 14th Place and Luzon Avenue NW (map).

The 3.5-story townhouses will be in nine clusters arranged around a central mews with a street winding through. They will be 16 feet and 20 feet wide and will have rear interior garages beneath balconies.

The façades of the townhouses, designed by W.C. Ralston, will be composed of brick in shades of burgundy, rose and a "desert" tan, while the rear façades will be dark grey. Architectural details will include cast stone accents, brick jack arches, window-shaped brick recesses on end units and rusticated brick bases on some.
The townhouses will be part of the earlier wave of development of over 2,000 residential units, 240,000 square feet of retail, over 500 square feet of office and nonprofit space, 150,000 square feet of hotel rooms, 14 acres of open space and a grocery store across the 66-acre campus. The Historic Preservation Review Board is scheduled to consider the concept plan for the townhouses in two weeks.
