Local Business Champions Roll Out High Tech Commuting Options

The commercial building landscape is constantly changing and new technologies allow people to work remotely or commute in more green, cost-effective ways.
“As technology continues to evolve, it is highly important for building owners and developers to understand how innovative transportation options can support their tenants’ commutes, impact their bottom line, and allow them to stand out from the competition” says Arlington Transportation Partners’ Commercial Services Business Development Manager Dag Alemayehu.
Arlington Transportation Partners’ Champions program recognizes properties that are supporting flexible, sustainable travel. Each year they recognize a new class of Champions who are industry leaders having a positive impact on the environment and the community.
In 2019, several commercial buildings were on the forefront of creating places that work for their occupants and connecting their employees with transportation options around them. These Champions lead the way in making Arlington County a great place to work and live.
Sign up for Champions 2020 and discover how your building can stay ahead of the curve. ATP can help set you up for success with services including:
Fully Functional Bike Facilities
More urban commuters are choosing active transportation and are arriving to work by bike or on foot. Platinum Champion Ballston Exchange (Jamestown Urban Management) has a designated bike lane guiding tenants of the office complex through the garage to the bike room. There, commuters can park their bikes in a controlled-access space, make minor repairs, and lock their belongings away while they shower and prepare for the workday. To promote this amenity, they hold bike tune-up events to get tenants comfortable with the idea of biking to work.
A good complement to a bike room is a docking station for people to park rented scooters. This gives scooter commuters a place to park safely, while also corralling scooters from scattering on sidewalks.
Real-Time Transit Displays and Tech
Central Place (JBG Smith) —another Platinum Level Champion— invested in a well-placed live transportation display near building exits that lets people know about their transportation options at-a-glance on their way out. These screens can be customized to include other building information and announcements. Tenants can also download a desktop plug-in to see live updates before leaving their seats.
Geo-Fenced Ridesharing
It’s easy to flexibly commute and be car-free, but sometimes business travel demands the use of a car. The team at 3001 & 3003 Washington Boulevard (Transwestern), a Platinum level Champion, purchased geo-fenced Lyft codes for a tenant’s employees to easily get to meetings at the Pentagon for free. These codes only work for rides starting or ending at locations designated by the building team. This gave employees the peace of mind to get work done during the day without having to give up their sustainable commutes.
As we keep an eye on how on how the COVID-19 situation develops, we wanted to inform you that ATP’s Champions program will continue as planned. We practice responsible social distancing and are available to meet with you virtually over video-conferencing and via phone calls.
