20 Minutes Faster To NYC? Amtrak Launches New Acela Trains

This week, Amtrak officially launched the NextGen Acela, a fleet of new trains that can reach top speeds of 160 mph and potentially shave 20 minutes off the trip between DC and NYC.
Five of the new trains -- with 27% more seats than older models -- were put into operation on Thursday with a full rollout of 28 trains expected by 2027.
In addition to higher speeds, the trains also incorporate a tilt system to ensure smoother, quieter rides. Inside, there are wider seats, individual power outlets and USB ports, and 5G WiFi. First Class upgrades include meals designed by chef Stephen Starr of Le Diplomate fame.
While the new trains can reach speeds 15 mph higher than previous models, it may be tough for them to hit that maximum. That's because of Amtrak's aging infrastructure (tracks, signals and switches) and the fact that, unlike other Asia, Amtrak trains still share tracks with commuter and freight trains, which inevitably slows down passenger trains.
