Congressional Development has been carving out seven condos at 430 M Street NW (map), the site of a duplex that was built in the 1880s, UrbanTurf has learned. The units will deliver next month.

The property, which is just behind Yale West Apartments, was originally built in 1887 and was designed by Adolf Cluss and Paul Schulze, a duo who designed many iconic buildings around DC, including Eastern Market, the Smithsonian Arts and Industries Building and Calvary Baptist Church. Also a city planner, Cluss, according to some sources, was the one who lobbied the city to narrow the streets and encouraged residents to plant gardens in front of their homes. The pair dipped into residential real estate from time to time, building row houses for DC’s wealthier set.

One-bedroom units will start at $350,000, and two-bedrooms at $430,000. For more information, contact Beasley Real Estate who will be handling sales.

Good article.  Just wanted to mention that I think you mean the Smithsonian Arts and Industries Building, not Air and Industries.

    Hanan,

Thanks for the catch. We made the correction.

My book “Adolf Cluss, Architect, From Germany to America” published in 2005 by The Historical Society of Washington, D.C. and Stadrarchiv Heilbronn (Germany) on page 176 lists this property as: H.H. Wells residence, 430 M Street, NW, 1887, demolished. Perhaps this condo renovation is a later building.

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for the comment. We got our info from a couple different sources; here is a report from the Historic Preservation Review Board that states that the property was designed in 1887 by Cluss and Schultze:

We’ll keep looking to see if we can confirm further.
