Wegmans to Walter Reed?: Figure 1

A big DC retail deal could be negotiated in Vegas over the next three days.

The Washington Examiner is reporting that Wegmans has scheduled meetings this week with DC government officials at the International Council of Shopping Centers’ annual meeting in Las Vegas to discuss bringing the grocery store to the planned re-development of the Walter Reed Medical Center.

The paper reports that the extremely popular grocery store has two meetings scheduled, one with the mayor and the other with DC council members:

“Wegmans’ senior vice president is scheduled to meet with the mayor while Councilmen Harry Thomas Jr., Vincent Orange and Michael Brown are meeting separately with the retailer. Analyst David Livingston of DJL Research said scheduling two meetings is significant, noting the grocer typically spends years researching a location before it commits.”

If you have any friends from upstate New York, chances are you have heard them rave about Wegmans, the family-owned supermarket chain that has a following rivaling Trader Joe’s. Last October, Wegmans inched closer to DC proper by opening a location at the Woodmore Towne Center in Prince George’s County. This location is slightly closer to DC (25 minute drive) than the chain’s Fairfax location (30-50 minutes depending on traffic).
