Unemployment Drops in MD and VA, Unchanged in DC: Figure 1

The unemployment rate in March dropped in Maryland and Virginia, but remained unchanged in DC, according to a report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Specifically, the unemployment rate decreased from 7.1 percent to 6.9 percent in Maryland, and from 6.4 percent to 6.3 percent in Virginia; DC’s unemployment rate remained at 9.5 percent for the second month in a row. A year ago, the unemployment rate in DC was 10.1 percent, 7.6 percent in Maryland, and 7.1 percent in Virginia.

While the across-the-board drop in unemployment is a good sign, it is important to remember that unemployment rates vary significantly from neighborhood to neighborhood in the area. For example, in late March, Bloomberg News reported that Ward 8 had the highest unemployment rate of “any U.S. metropolitan area with a comparable size workforce.” In contrast, the unemployment rate in Ward 3 was just 2.7 percent at the time.
