This Week's Find: A Designer's Countryside Farmhouse Creation

This Week's Find is not our normal DC-area fare. Instead, UrbanTurf is highlighting a new listing near Shenandoah National Park that includes a cabin built nearly 200 years ago and a barn retrofitted into a loft by a DC furniture designer.
A look back at the listing's history reveals that the main house once served as a doctor's office, and the barn was a horse stable for the bed and breakfast down the road. The main residence was originally a log cabin, and the floors and ceilings feature 14" locally sourced pine wood beams that are original to the build.

The seller is furniture designer Robert Chapman, who owned the Archer Modern store in Georgetown, which sold custom furnishings and mid-century modern artwork from the 1950s and 1960s. He started remodeling the barn into a livable space and customizing the home's furnishings shortly after closing the storefront in 2015.
“I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into the barn,” Chapman told UrbanTurf.
The new layout in the barn was dictated by the structure of the property, and the space includes industrial detailing, like black window frames, exposed pipes, and a wood-burning fireplace. The open floorplan creates an airy feel and the full kitchen allows for the barn to qualify as a private residence.
A rope-wrapped chandelier over the dining table alludes to the farm's rustic setting. Light from the multitude of windows cuts through the glass railing in the evenings, scattering rainbows across the space. An upstairs loft space would make for the perfect office.
