This Week's Find: A Home For the Industrial Naturalist
Outside of UrbanTurf's typical geographic scope, This Week's Find sits on the banks of the Tred Avon River on Maryland's Eastern Shore, overlooking a nature reserve. Designed by architect Mitch Hager for his parents, the listing blends natural eco-elements with heavy industrial features for a unique aesthetic.
Inside, the Douglas Fir butterfly roof draws attention to the home's symmetry while lightening up the space. Another warm element is the six-foot tall concrete fireplace with a clay chimney in the living room.

The kitchen features industrial finishings, down to the professional appliances that one would see in a Michelin Star restaurant. UrbanTurf appreciates the fun additions, such as the built-in beer tap and large popcorn maker.
A primary suite takes up an entire corner of the house, and has a sunken bathtub and shower, which converts to an outdoor area for summer use. A small cottage annex off the main house features the perfect space for a workshop or mother-in-law suite. Additionally, there are grandfathered rights to create an infinity pool.
The one-foot thick floors include a nine-zone geothermal heating and cooling system. Vertical wood beams lining the exterior glass wall help the home to keep out unwanted heat from the sun, saving on energy costs without blocking river views.
With over three acres of meadowland, featuring several hundred species of plants, new owners can enjoy complete privacy. The irrigated root system of the meadow acts as a water mitigation system and helps to ensure that the home doesn't suffer from heavy rain or unusual weather patterns since it only sits 80 feet from the river, up a gentle hill, according to the listing agent.
A look into the home's 2016 construction can be found online, including photos from the planning, construction and ideation process.
