Unless you have shunned modern technology in recent years, you have heard of iTunes, the iPod and the iMac. However, you may not be familiar with the i-house. Earlier this month, Tennessee-based Clayton Homes launched the energy efficient yet compact home model that could prove to be a very cheap option for environmentally-conscious, first-time home buyers.
The selling point of the i-house is not only its low price tag, but that it can be powered for about $1/day. The home is outfitted with a variety of energy efficient features, including low-E windows, high-efficiency appliances, and solar panels that help cut electricity consumption in half. The homes also come with tankless hot-water heaters, and a cistern that collects rainwater to be used for various outdoor uses.

Living Room at i-house Model
There are two options for models of the i-house: A 723 square-foot one-bedroom, one-bath model for about $74,000 and a 1,023 square-foot two-bedroom, one-bath model for about $93,000. Both of these models can be set up in about seven different ways depending on how you want the rooms and porch laid out. (There are additional costs based on the layout.) Delivery costs to the DC area average about $2,000 to $2,400.
