Slow Down: New Speed Cameras Operating in DC

Starting on October 1, DC drivers will want to slow down on a number of city blocks where they have been used to stepping on the gas.

WTOP reported this morning that new speed cameras have been installed at 19 places in DC with high rates of accidents and police calls. The full list can be viewed here, but most of the new cameras are in northeast and southeast where the speed limit hovers around 30 miles an hour. The cameras are now operating, but fines will not be issued until the beginning of October.

The news of the speed camera installation comes about a month after the Alexandria police department announced new red-light cameras at three of the area’s intersections: South Patrick Street and Franklin Street (map), South Patrick Street and Gibbon Street (map) and Duke Street and South Walker Street (map). Drivers caught running red lights at these intersections receive a $50 fine.

While one of the goals of speed cameras is to make drivers slow down, they are also big money makers for the city government. Last fiscal year, DC issued 147,000 mobile camera tickets with a minimum fine of $75 apiece.
