This spring, the public got its first glimpse of a potential park redesign of one of DC's most notorious intersections. Now, landscape architect SWA/Balsley is presenting a more detailed design concept for the infamous "Dave Thomas Circle".
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is seeking concept approval from the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) to turn the open spaces at the Florida and New York Avenue NE (map) intersection into a public destination.
The renderings depict a design that borrows from, yet simplifies the preliminary concepts shared in May, with a sculptural focal point in the center parcel (Parcel 2, current site of Wendy's) and an "adult playground" on the eastern Parcel 3. The design retains features such as seat-walls and sculptural screens, and incorporates a site for a kiosk and several planting and garden areas.
The CFA will review the concept on Thursday. Landscape architecture firm ParkerRodriguez, art consultant Jean Efron, lighting design firm CM KLING + ASSOCIATES, and the NoMa Parks Foundation round out the project team.
Additional renderings are below.
