Amazon is the likely replacement for the recently-shuttered Giant grocery store in Friendship Heights, sources recently told UrbanTurf.
The company plans to open a store at the former Giant location at 5463 Wisconsin Avenue (map) which closed last week due to low sales. Sources say that the Amazon store will open towards the end of 2020 after the company makes changes to the current layout and the facade.

Amazon has a variety of new brick-and-mortar stores that it is rolling out, but signs indicate that this store may be its new grocery concept.
The new outpost will be located in The Collection at Chevy Chase, a restaurant, retail and office development in Friendship Heights. There is a covenant that requires owner Chevy Chase Land Company to maintain an on-site grocery store, and with the Giant closed, there is no on-site grocery option. Chevy Chase Land Company and Amazon did not respond to requests for comment for this article.
The location for the new store will sit about a quarter mile from the Amazon-owned Whole Foods store at 4420 Willard Avenue (map). This appears to be a trend with new Amazon locations, as the Washington Business Journal reported earlier this week that the company looks to be opening another grocery store along 14th Street, about 2.5 blocks from the P Street Whole Foods.
UrbanTurf will update this article as we receive more information.
