by Mark Wellborn

The number of homes sold in Northern Virginia and DC increased in April, according to Metropolitan Regional Information Systems. The increase in sales is an indication that bargain hunters are still taking advantage of low home prices. In NoVa, home sales rose 6 percent compared to the same month last year, and in DC sales were up 13 percent.

Specifically, 1,544 homes sold in Northern Virginia in April compared with 1,455 in April 2008. In DC, 417 homes sold, an increase of 49 sales over the same month last year (368).

In DC, properties were spending almost two more weeks on the market than they were a year ago, but the median sale price dropped from $438,000 to $389,000. In NoVa, properties are actually spending on average two weeks less time on the market than a year ago, and the median sale price has dropped in Fairfax and Arlington County.
