DC Needs An ENERGY STAR Infusion

One of our favorite area real estate bloggers, Dewita Soeharjono aka UrbanTrekker, recently sat down with Sam Rashkin, the National Director of ENERGY STAR Homes. For those that don’t know, ENERGY STAR is a joint initiative between the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy that is focused on helping Americans save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices. (You have probably seen their logo on various home appliances.) Dewita’s summary of the interview is quite interesting and you can read it in its entirety here.
To whet your appetite, here is a quote from Rashkin when he was asked why the DC region has lower penetration than other areas when it comes to application of ENERGY STAR practices:
“The concept [in DC] is builders build it and they (buyers) will come. There’s no pressure, no utility companies take charge, no leading builder, no state energy program requirements. None of these things are here.”
