After years of experimenting with its branded brick-and-mortar grocery concepts, Amazon is pulling the plug on Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go physical stores, the company announced on Tuesday.
Amazon said it plans to close these locations and redirect its focus toward expanding Whole Foods Market, as well as doubling down on fast online grocery delivery services. Some Amazon Fresh and Go locations will be converted into Whole Foods stores, but it has yet to be announced which store will be converted.
“While we’ve seen encouraging signals in our Amazon-branded physical grocery stores, we haven’t yet created a truly distinctive customer experience with the right economic model needed for large-scale expansion,” Amazon said.
As far as the DC region, there are eight stores in the area that will be closing their doors. Amazon did not provide a timetable as to when those stores would close.
