New Palette, Solar Panels and Charging Stations: The Changes at Mid City's New 5th Street Project

Last summer, MidCity Financial filed an application for a new 360-plus unit project to replace the Washington Apartments Complex in the 1200 block of 5th Street NW (map). Now, the development has a different color palette, more provisions for energy efficiency, and a different approach to its affordable housing.
In response to comments from the Zoning Commission, the Torti Gallas Urban-led design team has revised the proposed color palette in favor of a darker grey. The project has also added 1,400 solar panels to the roof, three electric vehicle charging stations in the 103-space parking garage, and e-bike charging outlets in the bicycle storage area.
Additionally, while over 10 percent of the total residential space (38 units) will still be dedicated to units for households earning up to 60% of median family income (MFI), the remaining three affordable units will be for households earning up to 50% MFI rather than 80 to 120% MFI.
The Zoning Commission hearing is scheduled for next week.
