A DC-based company is wading into the world of design-led modular homes.
TOMU recently announced the launch of TOMU Villas, a line of "Japanese and Scandinavian-inspired getaway dwellings."
The line consists of studio, 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom floorplans that are prefabricated in TOMU’s Frederick, Maryland facility and shipped to the buyer’s chosen site. The homes are aimed at private buyers as well as investors looking for an income-producing property to be used for short-term rental use.

“With recent trends in the secondary housing market, we saw an opportunity to provide a more recreational-use option for buyers that would otherwise be competing with primary residence buyers over the already thin existing housing stock,” Chris Osaka, the President and Founder of TOMU, told UrbanTurf. “By keeping our offering tight, we designed a modular system that can not only be produced more quickly but with higher material and finish quality at a more affordable price.”
Prices for the studio option start at $99,500. Waitlist reservations for the new homes just started with deliveries expected to begin next year.
